Women’s health and fitness are two main aspects that many busy women easily neglect. Thanks to social media these days, the desire to be a healthy and fit woman gets stronger each time one looks at an Instagram feed. Silky smooth skin with a slender figure 8, V-shape body, 6 packs, and working those butt toning exercises like it is just icing on the cake.
Don’t you wish that you can look just as hot, or even better than them?
Sorry ladies, but there is no quick fix to become a healthy and fit woman. Period. But there are many ways to become fit and healthy!
With the hectic demands of life balancing family and career, it can be understandable why busy moms are not able to prioritize their health and fitness as no. 1. Things do not get better for mom with societal pressure pressing her down from all angles. Many times, women turn to ‘shortcuts’ to try and lose weight. They start consuming weight-loss teas, create unhealthy and unbalanced diets, endangering their lives.
Either that or they wrap their tummies till they’re out of breath.
If you happen to be one of them, it is time to put a stop!
Health and fitness can be easily achieved if you put your mind (and body) to them. Many people have the misconception that one needs to be fit to look fab, or only the fit and fab belong to the gym.
Where did you get thought that from?!
Everyone can be a healthy and fit woman, regardless of body type – skeletal, pear-shaped, apple-shaped, or whatever other fruits shape your body belongs to. You are who you are, and it is time to embrace you! Ensure that you are eating nutritious food, hydrating yourself, and getting enough rest to score for the home run.
#1 Healthy and fit starts from the first meal of the day – Breakfast
Many dieticians have emphasized greatly on this, and many physical trainers have sworn by this, yet many of us do not honor it. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
You want to kickstart your metabolism, and your body needs that energy after fasting through the night when you sleep. Mental alertness is just as important as having fuel in the body.
I love how nutritionist, Adelle Davis, puts it, “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper”.
The type of breakfast that you should be looking at needs to have a good mix of carbs, proteins, healthy fats, and fiber. For example, fruit smoothie with Greek yogurt and nuts. If you’re a morning cereal person, look for whole-grain cereals that contain fiber and B Vitamins, and have it with milk or yogurt. You can alternate it with porridge oats too.
#2 Positive mindset = A Healthy You
What does it mean to have a positive mindset?
You are smiling, laughing with your family and friends, feeling all geared up for the day. But are you able to look at the bright side when your plans go wrong?
The journey to becoming a healthy and fit woman involves positive thinking, which will ultimately lead to your happiness. There are so many benefits of having a positive mind that will improve your overall well-being, one of them being having better immunity! Now that is something new for me too.
It is easy to be bothered by what others say about you, yourself can be your biggest enemy too. ‘Mirror mirror on the wall…’ But don’t let that evil witch in your head conquer you. Compliment yourself in the mirror, even if it is over a small matter. Every action can become positive with a positive thought. So, what if the model in Snapchat has smooth skin, are you willing to apply 11 different types of creams when you wake up in the morning just for a perfect photo? Besides, with so many filters these days, are you certain that she is not using one?
If you are happy with what you are doing right now, there is no need to compare with someone else’s life with whom you have no connection. You never know what goes on behind those filters.
#3 Maintain a healthy weight
Many women, not forgetting myself, are self-conscious of their bodies and how people look at us. Those shameless love handles and thighs that jiggle away happily as you walk.
Despite all these flaws, a good weighing machine can tell you if you have the optimal Body Mass Index (BMI). Get those that measure body fat and analyze your body’s composition.
Being overweight can have potential chronic issues in the long run, leading to a life of poor health. Going above the ideal BMI also affects your sleep and fertility. So if you are looking to start or expand your family, it is time to start looking into balanced meals and exercises to hit your BMI range.
#4 Fitness is still a thing
You do not have to be a gym rat to exercise. You do not need to have good stamina to start jogging around the neighborhood. Walking is also part of the routine to be a healthy and fit woman! As long as you get your heart rate accelerating, you are moving about (doing household chores are one of them, I’m not kidding you!), you are exercising.
So be kind to yourself if you have not been exercising for a long time, start slow. Start buying those cool yoga pants and bright-colored sports bra, be in the mood, and be ready to show them off. Do stretches in the morning, bring your dog for a longer walk, cycle with your kids, etc. You want to get oxygen flowing in your blood, so that when your brain cells start performing at a higher level, leaving you more awake and focused.
#5 Water must not be forgotten
Drinking enough water a day is often overlooked. We know how important our body needs water, however, we do not know how water has an impact on our physical body as well.
You should have read that drinking water can have baby smooth skin, and a cup of water in the morning can help you to lose weight. Good hydration can also help you to relieve bloating, headaches and body ache.
If you do not have a routine of drinking water, start to increase your water intake slowly. Use infused water by adding fruits or herbs, especially in the summertime, or tropical climate like from where I am in Asia. My trick to getting my boys to drink water regularly is to start by buying them a 750ml – 1L water bottle of their choice. Our active lifestyle means that we all must stay hydrated, and kids say yes to sugar drinks, no to plain water. I will alternate different fruits into their water bottles daily and chill them, except when they are in school. It has been working so far as they will be looking forward to different flavors infused water drinks and drink them without many protests.
#6 Enjoy the process
Whatever you do, you have to enjoy what you are doing or it will not be sustainable.
Sure, your lifestyle will be different initially if you are not used to exercising, or having sets of routines to follow through. There will be struggles along the way, but if it is causing too many restrictions, then what you are doing is not for you. Time to tweak those plans.
But you should not feel that the process is a burden.
If you are feeling this way, adjust things to your comfort level. Don’t be too hard on yourself – health and fitness are just part of a better lifestyle to be a healthy and fit woman. Do not feel guilty if you do not follow any diet plans at the start. Avoid beating yourself up if you did not come up with regular sets of routines. Work towards consistency at your own pace, even if it takes weeks or months. The trick is to never give up.
To be healthy and fit takes time and consistency. Overnight succession is not possible, unless you look into aesthetics surgery, but that is still only external beauty. You want to feel beautiful inside and outside, and that takes effort on your part.
As a mom especially, society tends to form stereotypes that can easily bring moms down. This is why in my opinion, positive thinking should be one of your top priorities to work on if you are constantly self-doubting yourself.
Another point to note is when you start to increase your workout routines, it is very easy to reward yourself with food after an intense workout or punish yourself in the gym when you overeat. Bear in mind that food (health) and exercise (fitness) are tools on their own, and they do not equate to one another. If you want to enjoy the food, fully relish it. Work out a plan when you know you may be having a feast, but do not force exercising upon yourself just to burn those calories.
I hope that this article has given you a better insight into becoming the healthy and fit woman you want to be. We all deserve to be happy, and happiness starts from within ourselves.
