What makes routines so important?
When you were a kid, your parents would have sets of rules; bedtime, meal times, playtimes, etc. When you become a young adult with your long-awaited freedom, your routines faded away into the unknown and never came back.
You get to decide the time you want to shower, have your meals at any time of the day, sometimes skipping breakfast. Things start to get unorganized as you lose track of time. There is no longer a schedule to stick to. Eventually, you get tired of your lifestyle and you become stressed out, overwhelmed, and unproductive. In short, you have lost your direction.
I used to view routines as boring, rigid, and dull, and I know many people share similar views. In recent years, I realized how much having a routine helps me juggle between my work schedules and my boys.
And I love planning my schedules on my planner. It gives me a clear direction of what my must-do tasks are.
I get to see that I have more free slots on my planner, which makes me a happy mommy. These free slots are usually spent with my boys, have my cuppa coffee and snacks (that’s my weakness!) or finish the mini chores that I have been avoiding.

Everyone has different sets of routines that they are comfortable with. Some people plan down to the second, while others note down their to-do lists and play by ear for the rest of the day. I am in the middle of both, but I have fixed timings to my meals and my workouts, and also revision times with my boys.
If you are still hesitant towards having a routine, you’re not alone! Many people I talked to feels that routines are a burden and restrictive. All I can say is, if you never try, you never know! You might become more productive, with more free time than usual, leading you to feel happier.
Here are some life-changing reasons why you should give having daily routine a shot:
Routine makes you efficient
Our need for making countless decisions reduce when there is a daily routine. You are clear of the tasks you have to do each day without having to think about it. When you complete one task, you move on to the next without needing to ask yourself “What’s next?”.
This question increases your stress level when you realized you have no idea what to do next, yet there is a pile of files sitting on your table.
With a daily habit, you become more productive. You get to figure out your productive timings and put in your focus during those hours. If mornings are when you are at your peak, 10 am to 12 pm will be your time to work on your ebook, or do up the analysis report that your client needs. You get to be able to tick off tasks on your list, and you feel good about it. It makes you more confident and competent.
Routine helps you focus better
When you are used to having a daily routine, you will be able to complete your tasks on time. You learn to eliminate distractions and focus on your performance to complete the tasks. This will make your performance smooth and more efficient.
Your self-discipline improves as you start portraying this positive attitude and becomes organized. Not only will you start feeling happier when you work, but you will also bring out this positivity in your relationship, emotions, and other aspects of your life.
Routine gives you more free time
Many people think that if they are doing something on the laptop the whole day, they are being productive. But, staring at your laptop and checking through Facebook does not make you very productive. You have wasted your precious time, and not getting anything done on your list.
But! If you have a daily routine, you do not need much willpower or determination to convince yourself to get that excel sheet done. You already know what you need to do for the day, and be able to catch that blockbuster movie you’ve been waiting for with your spouse.
You are rewarded with more free time and allow yourself to relax from work.
Routine makes it easier for you to make plans in your planner
When you have daily routines, they will get inserted first thing into your planner. After which you can work out your other schedules.
This helps you to prioritize and organize better, ensuring that you won’t be left pulling your hair out trying to see what fits into where.
P.S. Having a planner is important to be clear of what your day’s tasks are, and prevent you from skipping your tea breaks. Everyone needs a break (or breaks) to recharge, but if you have not set a clear expectation of yourself, you might end up not completing much by the end of the day or week.
Routine makes you feel better of yourself
Knowing clearly what your tasks are and completing them makes one feel competent and fulfilling. When you finish a big assignment, you feel like you have conquered the world and finally, you can have that deserving caramel macchiato frap venti.
With regular routines, you get to include more family time. Having a weekly family gathering at your parents’ place with the kids is a great routine to start with. It helps strengthen the family bond between the kids and their grandparents, and for everyone to simply enjoy each other’s company.

Many of us have always been performing routines that we do not even realize. Getting out of bed at 7.30 am to prepare for work, working from 9 am to 5 pm, going to the pantry at 11 am to idle and wait for that lunch hour. Those are routines that our minds and bodies are accustomed to.
Due to the COVID-19, most of us have been staying at home and this routine that we are used to is broken.
Getting yourself into new routines can be difficult and it takes time. Your lifestyle and personality also play a part in creating new daily routines. But if you are looking to break your bad habits and turn the negative emotions into positive ones, there are lots of routines that can be done easily.
Make morning or evening strolls a daily exercise routine, have nutritious breakfast every day, do things that make you happy.
Enjoy the moments of these trials and errors to understand your comfort zone and to push your boundaries.
What is Your Daily Routine?
For me, I must have breakfast between 8 to 9 am, and I need to exercise at least 5 times a week. 2 days of intense workout, 1 day of long-distance running, and 1-day rest. Sometimes my routines change due to my boys’ last-minute change of schedules, and I’ll have to live with it. Being a work-from-home mom with 3 boys, I have come to accept that last-minute stunts are a normal thing.
Remember that even though having a routine is beneficial, you must learn to be flexible too. If there is no way to perform that routine, slot it into your afternoon or night, or simply not do it. There will be no penalty for not carrying it out. The objective of having routines is to make your life easier, not more miserable.
So go ahead and start planning those activities that make you happy!
